Round
Privacy Policy
Round ("the App") is an iOS interval-timer application built for strength training, HIIT, Tabata, and circuit workouts. This policy explains how information is handled in the App.
1. Core principles
The App does not require account registration and does not display any advertising. Your content — presets, workout history and settings — is stored locally on your Apple devices (iPhone and Apple Watch) and is never transmitted to any server operated by the developer.
The App does send anonymous usage statistics to a third-party analytics service in order to improve the App. See section 2, “Usage statistics”, for details. You can turn this off at any time in Settings.
2. Usage statistics
The App sends anonymous usage statistics to TelemetryDeck (TelemetryDeck GmbH, Germany) for the sole purpose of improving the App — understanding which features are used and where people stop partway through.
What is sent:
- App session start (launch)
- Timer start, including whether the preset was one of the starter presets or one you created
- Timer end, including whether it was completed or cancelled and how far it progressed
- An anonymous per-device identifier generated by the SDK, plus general device information such as OS version
What is not sent: your name, email address or account information; the names you give your presets; the contents of your workout history; body mass or any other health data; location; the advertising identifier (IDFA).
These statistics are not used for advertising and are never sold or shared with other companies. They are not used to track you across apps or websites (“tracking” as defined by App Tracking Transparency).
How to turn it off: in the App, go to Settings → Privacy → Share Usage Data and switch it off. If the App is launched with this setting off, analytics is never initialised and nothing is sent.
3. Information stored on the device
The App stores the following information only on your iOS / watchOS device (in SwiftData / UserDefaults). It is not synced to iCloud or any other cloud service.
- Timer presets (name, Step / Set configuration, Work / Step Rest / Set Rest durations, Preparation time, accent color, the workout type to record, and the "Record to Health" setting)
- The contents of each Step (which exercise it refers to, whether it is performed on the left or right side, the name and emoji you gave a custom Step, and the pace you selected in repetitions per minute)
- Session history (date, duration, completed sets, preset used)
- Display settings (appearance mode, sound on/off, volume, haptics, sound ducking, timer center display style)
- Apple Watch integration settings (e.g., wrist-down power save)
- Body weight you entered manually for calorie estimation
- Per-session calorie information (the estimated active calories, the body weight used for that estimate and where it came from (manual entry / Apple Health), and the measured active calories from an Apple Watch workout together with their source and the time they were recorded)
- The state of a session that is still running, so the timer can resume after an interruption or after returning from the background (the preset in progress, position, remaining time, pause records, and a tally of completed Steps)
- In-app guidance and status flags (whether onboarding has been shown, whether a review request has been presented, and similar)
The App does not collect the Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA), location, contacts, calendar, photos, or other-app usage.
4. App Group / Widget storage
To populate the home-screen widget (Round Widgets), snapshots such as the following are saved to App Group UserDefaults. This region is accessed by app extensions on the same device and is not transmitted to any external server.
- Recent session aggregates (weekly / monthly session count, total time)
- Information about the currently displayed preset (name, color, configuration)
Deleting the App removes these snapshots as well.
5. Apple Watch sync (WatchConnectivity)
The App provides an Apple Watch companion ("Round Watch"). Synchronization between iPhone and Apple Watch uses Apple's WatchConnectivity framework and only occurs between devices paired to the same Apple ID. The synced information below never passes through any developer-operated server.
- iPhone → Apple Watch: timer presets, display settings, currently selected preset
- Apple Watch → iPhone: session history from sessions performed independently on Apple Watch
6. HealthKit (Apple Health) integration
The App writes workout records to Apple HealthKit and reads body weight and active energy from it. Both are limited to what the purposes listed below require. Information read from HealthKit is never transmitted to any server operated by the developer, or anywhere else off your devices.
What the App writes
- Writes to Health happen only for sessions whose preset has the per-preset setting "Record to Health" turned ON. When that setting is OFF, neither the iPhone nor the Apple Watch writes anything.
- iPhone: when a session completes, the App writes a workout record (HKWorkout). The information written consists of: workout type (the activity type chosen on the preset), start date, end date, duration, and the pause / resume events of that session.
- Apple Watch: starting a session starts a watchOS workout session, and a workout record (HKWorkout) is written when it ends. The App never writes calorie samples to Health.
- On the first write, iOS / watchOS presents a system dialog asking permission to write to HealthKit. If permission is not granted, no data is written.
What the App reads
- Body weight (iPhone): read as the weight used to estimate active energy burned (only in versions where Round Pro is available, and only if you use that feature). Only the single most recent body-weight value is read; weight trends and any other health data are not. Permission is requested only when you choose to use the Apple Health value on the body-weight screen in Settings. The App never asks for body-weight access in order to show the timer or your history.
- Active energy (Apple Watch): read so that the active calories measured during an Apple Watch workout can be shown as the measured value in your Round history (only in versions where Round Pro is available, and only if you use that feature). Permission is requested when you start a session on the Apple Watch with a preset that has "Record to Health" ON. Only the value measured during that workout is read.
- Values read from HealthKit are used only to calculate and display calories on your device and to store them in that session's history on your device. They are not sent to the developer's servers or to any third party.
Read and write permissions can each be changed at any time. Permissions are managed per device, so where you change them differs by device.
- iPhone permissions (writing workouts, reading body weight): change them under iPhone Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Round, or from the Health app on your iPhone.
- Apple Watch permissions (writing workouts, reading active energy): change them on the Apple Watch itself under Settings → Health → Apps → Round (wording and hierarchy may differ between watchOS versions).
Data written to HealthKit is managed by Apple's Health app and is outside the App's control. To delete it, use the Apple Health app.
7. Purposes of use
- Display, save, and delete timers, presets, and history
- Aggregate data for widget display
- Sync presets, history, and settings between iPhone and Apple Watch
- Save workout records to Apple HealthKit (only with user authorization and per-preset setting)
- Estimate active energy burned using your body weight, and display and store that estimate in your history
- Display and store the active calories measured during an Apple Watch workout in your history
- Investigate issues and improve quality (only when you contact us by email)
8. Third-party disclosure
The App does not sell user information, and does not share it with third parties for advertising. No data is transmitted to any external server operated by the developer.
There are exactly two outward data flows:
- Through Apple frameworks (WatchConnectivity / HealthKit) to your paired devices and the Apple Health app
- The anonymous usage statistics sent to TelemetryDeck described in section 2, which you can turn off in Settings
9. Data deletion
You can delete data in the App as follows.
- Individual presets / history: swipe to delete or use edit mode on each screen.
- Whole-app deletion: deleting Round from your iPhone removes all data the App had stored in SwiftData / UserDefaults / App Group. Data on the Apple Watch side is removed by uninstalling the Watch app or by unpairing.
- Data written to HealthKit: delete entries individually or in bulk via the Apple Health app. Deleting Round does not remove past entries written to HealthKit (per Apple's design).
10. Age restrictions
The App imposes no age restriction. However, due to the physically active nature of its use, minors should use it with parental consent.
